When Steve Smith signed with the Eagles I’m not sure he knew what he was getting into. He has been going back and forth with Giants fans on his facebook. And it just so happens that in the process of defending himself, he has taken subtle jabs at the New York Giants organization.
Here are some highlights from his Facebook page:
“For those of you saying the giants offered me a 5 yr $35 million contract w/$15 million guaranteed before i got hurt- thats news to me bc if that happened i would have signed it and done back flips on my way to practice!!”
“Instead of cursing at me and wishing my family and my knee harm, i wish you could understand that i truly wanted to stay here but that the giants DIDN’T want me here unfortunately..”
“This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did..”
Clearly he felt disrespected by the Giants organization and he is making that point very clear. Steve Smith is desperately trying to win the PR battle with the Giants. He is trying to blame the Giants for his defection to the Eagles. Is it true? Maybe but I think he would be better off if he would stop talking about how the Giants organization failed him.
But today, he brought out the BIG guns. In an article published by the New York Post, Smith is quoted as saying:
“It’s really exciting because they throw the ball so much here, so many downfield throws, I was used to short [and] shorter stuff in New York, but here, they’re running.”
I see Smith is now taking some parting shots at the offense. Perhaps they’re justified as well, Steve Smith is a guy that ran a 4.4 coming out of college yet he was only targeted deep on 15.2% of his targets in 2009 (his last full healthy year) . He had the 17th highest catch rate on those targets amongst qualified receivers so you would think he was at least able to get it done deep. If you’re one of those people who likes to read between the lines you might’ve just heard Steve Smith call the New York Giants offense conservative and that they misused his talents.
And then, there was this:
“I used to hate the Eagles, now I don’t like the Giants,”
You don’t like the Giants? Welcome to the club buddy.
